I'm having a challenge trying to learn grozing from a book. I managed to break 2 s-shaped pieces of glass this afternoon attempting to learn and just got frustrated. How close to the pattern line is it realistic to get? Should you score the line first? The curved side goes up, right? How big a bite? I don't know what I'm doing and it's not working!

Omigawd, Mia!...you said one of the "forbidden" words here. JC doesn't allow his students to do the dreaded grozing. Back in the OLD days (before he mellowed out ) there were many pitched battles between him and other users on forums any time the word was mentioned.

Now, having said that....and because he's never been able to intimidate me (actually nobody ever has) I will tell you that you first need to start with a good grozing or grozing/breaking pliers. There's no substitute for good tools. When you groze, you don't take big bites out of glass, you simply nip and scrape the glass edge with the teeth of the pliers until you're where you want to be. You can work your way to the pattern line...BUT...deep curves and S-shaped pieces should have as much glass as possible cut out before you start. Grozing is never a substitute for good cutting skills.

BTW...JC's objection to grozing is that it causes small fractures on the glass edge that weaken it and lead to possible breakage with further handling. Likely theory, though it's a very old, traditional technique and many people use it.
