Sorry to interrupt the new board celebration! I'm having a challenge trying to learn grozing from a book. I managed to break 2 s-shaped pieces of glass this afternoon attempting to learn and just got frustrated. How close to the pattern line is it realistic to get? Should you score the line first? The curved side goes up, right? How big a bite? I don't know what I'm doing and it's not working!

Hi Mia...congrats on actually talking glass! No problem.

Practice on some scrap (and wear Goggles if you're a newbie!)

How close to the pattern line is it realistic to get?
you can groze right up to the drawn OR the scored line

Should you score the line first?
you can either groze up to a score or just bite in bit by bit to reach a drawn line. Either is OK

The curved side goes up, right?
if you are using the combos, either is OK if you prefer the feel of any one way, but I prefer curved jaw underneath, so that the grozed sugary scrap falls away through the jaws of the pliers

How big a bite?
start takinbg little bites at first...as your proficiency grows, you'll get to be able to do bigger bites with confidence. Make sure you have self-opening return -springs on your grozers!

I don't know what I'm doing and it's not working!

This is the BIG secret of accurate consistent grozing,Mia....if you're right handed, hold the glass fairly loosely between your left thumb and first finger...now this is the IMPORTANT trick that amazed Quasi when I showed it to her here in England...DON'T waggle your right (pliers) hand/elbow loosely in the air...put the BOTTOM jaw of the grozers FIRMLY on the SECOND finger of the LEFT HAND...this makes the pliers steadier and like a blacksmith's last.Clamp your elbow to your rinbs like it was duct-taped there (Thanks Dennis!)

NOW you're ready to groze under control...DON'T rock the pliers up and down, just open and close them gently..ROCK THE GLASS UP AND DOWN! I PROMISE you this will work and you'll improve! Then just PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE!!!!

And maybe print this off and put it on your bench!

also goto the following site (copy and paste the blue writing ) and print the Inland notes and poictures off .....
