Well, first I clean the zinc with acetone. Then ONE swipe with Novacan patina. Don't scrub and rub it. Leave it on for one minute (not too wet) and take a clean paper towel and gently wipe off the excess. It helps if you stand on one leg and recite the alphabet backwards while you do this.
Not really, but it is a little finicky. You can also use gun bluing, but it is more gray than black. It does go on evenly, though.
