I seem to recall seeing something in a book called Winter Wonderland; can't lay my hands on my copy right now. Check through any Christmas/Holiday pattern books your supplier may have. Keep weight in mnd, depending on your tree. You can always adapt a design for a tree topper by attaching it to a teepee-shaped coil of heavy gauge wire. You could also make duplicate designs and attach them together at the top, spreading the bottom edges to accomodate the tree's stem and holding them apart with heavy wire or brass box hinge tubing. (There's a Santa star design in Here Comes Santa Claus which would be cute.) Angel books, star patterns, bird designs...
I have a lovely 3-D painted tin cardinal tree-topper which would be doable in glass. When making 3-D wings etc. be sure to design them to prevent hinging, or to reinforce it well.
I think I'll stop now and go jot down some ideas for next year!
